This time, I found myself heading to one of his most talked-about designs — The Els Club Teluk Datai, located on the mystical island of Langkawi. What I experienced over two days was nothing short of extraordinary. The Scenic Drive to a “Hidden” Gem The journey from Kuah to Teluk Datai took about 45 minutes. The drive itself felt like a postcard of Malaysia — paddy fields, roadside stalls, traditional wooden houses, and lush greenery everywhere. But I must admit — as the road narrowed into a small asphalt stretch surrounded by rustic scenery, I began to wonder if this was all just clever marketing. Was this really the road leading to a world-class Ernie Els signature course? Then came a right turn onto a winding hill road — and suddenly, like uncovering a secret, the clubhouse revealed itself. The manicured putting green stood proudly in front, framed by rainforest. At that moment, I knew I had arrived somewhere special. Day One: Jungle Fairways & Ocean Drama We started our first round from Hole 10 under perfect sunny skies. Holes 10 through 16 take you deep into mountain terrain and mini jungle trails. The atmosphere was peaceful, almost spiritual. Hornbills flew across the canopy, and the sounds of nature replaced the noise of the outside world. Then came the dramatic coastal stretch. Holes 17 and 18 sit beside the breathtaking Andaman Sea. Standing on the tee box with ocean views and giant eagles circling overhead was surreal. Both holes test your focus — it’s easy to get distracted by the scenery. Moving to Holes 1 and 2, we encountered hornbill nests and even a hornbill family nearby — something you rarely see on any golf course. Holes 3 through 9 wind back toward the clubhouse like a snake, with elevation changes and jungle views accompanying every shot. A small tip: be patient on Holes 5 and 17 as they share a green. Some golfers mistakenly played to the wrong pin — it happens! Mid-Round Break: Food, Drinks & Souvenirs After our round, we relaxed at the Hornbill Café with draft beers and satisfying local dishes. Nothing tastes better than good food after 18 challenging holes. Before leaving, I visited the souvenir shop and collected my personalized silver name engraving — a meaningful keepsake from this unforgettable trip. The Only Downside If there was one setback, it would be the shower facilities. I waited nearly 30 minutes for hot water, and when it finally came on, it was freezing cold at first — not ideal after a long round. Hopefully, that’s something they improve in the future. Day Two: Seamless & Satisfying I stored my golf bag safely at the club and returned the next morning hassle-free for another round. The second day allowed me to appreciate the layout even more — the strategy, the elevation, the way each hole blends naturally into the rainforest and coastline. Final Verdict: Better Than the Ocean Course? Having played both, I can confidently say that The Els Club Teluk Datai offers something even more special than the Ocean Course in Johor. It’s not just about design — it’s about environment, serenity, wildlife, and the raw beauty of Langkawi. This isn’t just golf. Its golf immersed in nature. And for me, it’s one of the most extraordinary golfing experiences I’ve had.....” Read more

The course is a muddy, soggy mess during the rainy season. Grass is overgrown, and even a perfect drive in the fairway disappears into the unkempt pile of mess.. At this price, it’s a complete rip-off. Avoid at all costs. Should be rename as Sawah Padi.” Read more
