Golf is a sport unlike any other. Golfing in Malaysia is another distinctive experience altogether, mainly because of the people, the culture and the food.
Malaysian Golfer
Malaysia - is a country blessed with people from multiracial backgrounds that are more than happy to golf with you. Malaysia is practising the beauty of what Donald Trump lacks to see in diversity which is unity.
As Malaysians, we were raised with acceptance in our hearts. You could be from any part of the world and still be called "bro" by a Malaysian.
Contrary to some parts of the world where golf is an upper-class sport, a Malaysian golfer can come from all kinds of social positions. You can easily see a CEO golfing side by side with a university student and it has become a norm for Malaysian golfers because of the golf app Malaysia called Deemples.
Don't be surprised if you're ever on Deemples in Malaysia and before you know it you're golfing with a Malaysian celebrity.
Malaysian Post-Golf Culture
We know we've partially tempted you to come golf in Malaysia, but like any good magician, we have more up our sleeves.
In order to have the full experience of golfing in Malaysia, you will have to participate in the post-golf culture as well. We have taken the privilege to list a few post-golf traditions for you below.
1. Massages
After an exhausting golf game, it's always good to hit the massage centre to relax your muscles. Malaysia has a variety of massage centres that offer an abundance of treatments at affordable prices like Thai Odyssey, Best Friend Foot Massage and Donna Spa.
Malaysia also has reflexology stalls at night markets scattered all over the country because Malaysians believe a healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
What's more relaxing than aromatherapeutic scents and relieving muscle pains. Next time you're golfing in Malaysia, make sure you stop by the nearest massage centre.
2. Body Wrap
"All that time under the sun is not good for the skin"
If you're a true golfer, you might have heard this phrase a few times and you have managed to convince yourself it's the bread and butter of golf people.
Being under the sun for a long time dries up your skin which leads to pigmentation, rashes and in the long run wrinkles.
Body wraps will help retain the moisture in your body as your body will be covered in a specially brewed mud mask and wrapped.
It's the best treatment after a long day on the greens. A few of the best body wrap spas are Urban Retreat Spa Mont Kiara, Vita Spa and Relax Two Traditional Blind Massage.
3. Floral Baths
Imagine a warm bath filled with flowers and bath salts to relax your muscles and mind after a good 5 hours on the golf course.
Malays believe that floral baths wash away your bad luck as well and replace it with the luck and positivity from the flowers. Definitely a good idea if you missed a few shots on the course. Floral baths are also available at spas that offer body wraps and massages so you don't have to travel far for the full Malaysian golfing experience.
It's like being reborn as a new golfer and that only happens while you're golfing in Malaysia.
Good food after Golf
Finally, we have come to the pièce de résistance - FOOD.
It's always hard to list down the best food in Malaysia because we're overspilled with it. It's a common problem forever Malaysian to decide what to eat because we have a variety of choices.
Nevertheless, we aim to please! Therefore, we have chosen three Malaysian food from three of the main cultural background in Malaysia.
1. Nasi Lemak
Everyone knows Malaysians love their Nasi Lemak. White rice wrapped in pandan leaf with fried anchovies, boiled egg, peanuts, fresh cucumber and spicy "sambal".
One of the best places to get this perfect pandan-wrapped happiness is a restaurant in Petaling Jaya called Botak Nasi Lemak.
Lucky for golfers the closest golf club to this restaurant would be Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.
2. Banana Leaf
Banana leaf is an Indian cuisine consisting of rice, curry, rasam, a lot of vegetables and pickles. You can also choose from several protein selections to give you that extra kick after a golf game.
There are a lot of banana leaf restaurants in KL but the best we have tried so far goes to a small restaurant in Bangsar, Nirwana Maju.
The best part of banana leaf is the restaurant is very generous with the portions to satisfy starving golfers.
3. Bak Kut Teh
Bak Kut Teh is a famous broth with pieces of cut out pork that you can enjoy on its own or with rice.
This dish is popular in Malaysia and Singapore. You can easily have this dish at any establishment but we want you to taste the best Bak Kut Teh after hitting 18 holes.
Sun Fong Bak Kut Teh, is a restaurant located in the middle of KL. The Bak Kut Teh served in Sun Fong has a unique broth as it is mixed with herbs which are natural muscle relaxers.
The next time you're golfing in Malaysia, don't forget to bring your best clubs the next time you're here. No golf buddy? Don't worry. Download Deemples and create a game. You'll be on the course with a full flight before you know it.
