Founded in 1967 by the British Marines, Sembawang Country Club started as a 9-hole course and was officially opened by Singapore's first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, in 1968. After the British forces withdrew in 1971, the New Zealand Southeast Asia Force briefly took over before the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) expanded the course to 18 holes in 1977. In the early 1980s, the SAF took full control of the club, which has since served as a key venue for military diplomacy.
